Guam: A Cultural Mixing Pot

Redine Yourself:
Discover what really makes you the individual you are.

01

Start to examine yourself.

When you look in the mirror, what do you see? Do you see the Filipino within? How about the Chamoru warrior that resides in your soul? Are you a mixed individual who has different bloodlines?

02

03

04

Begin the process of jotting down your ideas of your culture.

You can put anything down, even list items in order.

05

06

Examine the "culture" you represent.

Yes, you are from Guam, but what culture defines you? We have influences from many places: China, Philippines, United States of America, Chuuk, and almost anywhere else.

Guam is a cultural mixing pot. Are your traditions/values affected by other cultures?

I am a filipino woman, but I have a chamoru grandmother, married to my grandfather before my mother was born. She rasied us and taught us simple chamoru words. She would call me her "dikike," which I later learned meant small.

Organize your ideas and begin constructing your work.

Do you want to write poetry? How about a short story? It is your work; you are expressing your definition of culture within you.

Submit your work.

Work is never done but if you want others to see your progress, go ahead and submit your work. It will be posted along the walls of the University of Guam's English building for other students to see or posted on this site. Click the tab, "Submit Your Work" for more details.
